Smudge Painting in Affinity Photo?

Apr 23, 2018

Greetings,

I have found a bazillion YouTube instructional videos concerning smudge painting and color mixer brush usage in Photoshop, to 'convert" a photograph into a brushed painting, be it watercolor or oil.

Does anyone know of instructional videos for comparable techniques in Affinity Photo?

Thanks in advance for your help...!!

I don't do smudging, however you could probably use the PShop videos to guide you.

Here are the Affinity instructions for the tool:

"The Smudge Brush Tool allows you to drag colour around an image, similar to dragging a brush or finger through wet paint. It can be used to blend colours and create interesting brush effects.

Settings

The following settings can be adjusted from the context toolbar:

  • Width—the brush (stroke) size in pixels. Type directly in the text box or drag the pop-up slider to set the value.
  • Flow—how fast the brush effect is applied (1% is very slow, 100% is immediate). Type directly in the text box or drag the pop-up slider to set the value.
  • Force pressure to control size—Click to control brush size with pressure if using a pressure-sensitive device. This overrides brush defaults.
  • Strength—defines the extent to the smudging. Type directly in the text box or drag the pop-up slider to set the value."

Hi, Gordon,

Thanks for the response.

I have indeed been reading the Affinity Photo owner manual PDF, and so I'm familiar with the passages you quoted.

I'm hoping for videos specifically pertaining to Affinity Photo, so as to perhaps avoid having to interpolate the Photoshop instructions to fit Affinity.

Thanks again,

Re: Smudge Painting in Affinity Photo?

Sometimes it just easier to find a specialized piece of software rather than trying to master a program that isn't specialized. I often use FotoSketcher and/or Filter Forge as plugins.

Re: Smudge Painting in Affinity Photo?

One unfortunate aspect I have discovered when using the Smudge Brush and Paint Mixer Brush tools, is that my laptop computer cannot keep up with the brushes.

The program lags far behind when using either of these brush tools, and also when calling up the Brushes panel, I cannot call up the Colors panel until and unless I first clear the Brushes panel from my workspace.

Bummer....

Do either of those plugins use brush strokes to create art, or is it just a mouse click to apply a filter to the image?

Have you discussed this on the Affinity forum?

No. To do a stroke by stroke edit you will need to learn to use the various tools of your preferred editor.
